S.G.Ellis was founded in Bradford by the late Stanley G. Ellis in October 1966. After almost 21 years with the Yorkshire Electricity Board (YEB), where he progressed from apprentice to foreman, Stanley established his own electrical contracting business. His father, Harold Ellis, also worked for YEB as a senior contracts manager and shared valuable industry knowledge. During the company’s early years, Stanley undertook electrical work alongside plumbing and joinery to build the business. As demand grew, he recruited an electrician and an apprentice, initially operating from his home and garage. In 1968, the business became a limited company under the name S.G.Ellis (Electrical Contractors) Ltd. Following his retirement from YEB in 1970, Harold joined the company as bookkeeper and secretary.

In 1974 Stanley's son Brian joined the company as an apprentice electrician and began working his way up through the company, eventually becoming managing director. In 1978 the company bought its first premises at 273 Otley Road, Undercliffe, Bradford. This premises was an ex stone masons workshop, engraving tomb stones. With the new workshop, came additional members off staff, taking the numbers to 3 electricians and 3 apprentices. Around this time Stanley's wife Joan also joined the company taking over as book keeper.
In 1998 the company moved to a new premises at Advance House, West Street, Bradford. To date the company has a work force of over 30 people.
In 2002 Brian's Son Stewart Ellis joined the company, this making him the fourth generation to do so.
